Discrimination with your coffee anyone?
I was interviewed by Marcia MacMillan on CTV this week regarding the diversity training of Starbucks employees.
In Canada, we are thought to be strong believers in multiculturalism. We also like to think that we are above treating people with bias and disrespect. We sometimes have the attitude of having peaceful cohabitation handled; that we’re respectful to our neighbors, friends and colleagues all the time.
Unfortunately that’s not so. Even in Canada we have subtle instances of racism, acts of discrimination and exclusion. Here are my thoughts on why we need anti-bias and discrimination training in order to help us be vigilant so that we fall into negligent practices, dismissive ways of thinking and discriminatory behaviors that led to what happened in the Starbucks in Philadelphia.
